Several globally produced evidences suggest that the average age of onset of gastrointestinal cancers, and of colorectal cancer in particular, is decreasing. The result is that many patients develop these diseases before they are included in screening programmes and come to the attention of oncologists with more advanced disease. According to Cathy Eng (David H. Johnson Endowed Chair in Surgical and Medical Oncology, Professor of Medicine, Hematology and Oncology, Director for Strategic Relations, VICC Co-Director, GI Oncology and Co-Leader, GI Cancer Research Program Director, Young Adult Cancers Program Institutional PI, SWOG Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center, Nashville), whom we met at the last ESMO Gastrointestinal Cancers Congress 2024 in Munich, it is therefore crucial to foster greater awareness of the signs and symptoms associated with this disease so as to encourage early recognition.
